18 Cambodian garment workers killed in bus accident

HCM CITY (VNS) — At least 18 Cambodian garment workers travelling on a van were killed and many injured after a tourist bus collided with the van at around 7am today in Cambodia.

The accident occurred in Kompong Ro District in the southeastern province of Svay Rieng in Cambodia. The van in which they were travelling was transporting the workers to their jobs.

Koeng Khorn, the province's police chief, was quoted as saying in the Cambodia Daily newspaper that he did not know the name of the bus company, which began its trip in HCM City.

The Cambodian driver of the bus was arrested, the governor of the Svay Rieng province, was quoted as saying in the report from AFP.

Pav Sina, president of the Collective Union of Movement of Workers, said the garment workers were members of his union, according to a report in the Cambodia Daily newspaper.

At least five of the workers remain in serious condition at Chi Phu Referral Hospital in Bavet City, Cambodia, he said.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash, Khorn was quoted as saying in the Cambodia Daily. --VNS
