THUA THIEN - HUE (VNS) — Lightning killed a 50-year-old farmer in central Thua Thien – Hue Province yesterday afternoon while he was working in his field with his wife.

The man died immediately, though his wife was reportedly not harmed.

Lightning striking before thundershowers occurs often in the central provinces. On Sunday, a 54-year-old woman in neighbouring Quang Tri was struck and killed by lightning when she was walking home from her rice paddy.

The woman's death was the third in the province. Earlier in late April and May, two men in the province's mountainous Huong Hoa District were killed by lightning when they were farming in their field, as well.

Authorities have warned local residents to avoid open fields or standing near tall trees when there are potential lightning storms. — VNS
