HCM CITY (VNS) — HCM City Department of Health yesterday opened the country's first suboxone treatment centre for addicts in Go Vap District.

Suboxone, which combines buprenorphine and naloxone, is the US Food and Drug Administration's approved medication for opiate addiction.

Dr Nguyen Tan Binh, the department's head, said setting up the centre was an important step forward in HCM City's addiction treatment efforts.

The city received aid from the US and France to research into the use of suboxone to replace methadone for addiction treatment at the Go Vap District Preventive Health Centre last year.

The research established the effectiveness of the treatment.

The city had around 19,000 addicts, and the number would increase, Binh said.

The city had many programmes for addiction treatment and helping addicts integrate into society, he said, adding it had 13 methadone treatment centres. — VNS
