QUANG NGAI (VNS) — Three workers in Ly Son Island, 30km off Quang Ngai province coast, ate toxic crabs but narrowly escaped death after receiving treatment at the island's medical centre early this morning.
The director of the centre, Ma Huu Hau, told the Viet Nam News today that three workers of Phu Xuan construction company who were working at the island's ship dock had sea crabs they had caught from a coral reef last night.
With their limbs and tongue paralysed, the three workers were soon taken to the island's medical centre.
While two workers have been released this morning, one is undergoing further treatment at the provincial general hospital.
According to doctors at the medical centre, the workers who are from other provinces could not recognise toxic crabs from normal varieties in coral reefs around the island.
Consuming toxic crabs can be lethal because of the large amount of poison present in them.
There have been many cases of serious poisoning in coastal area caused by toxic sea crabs, snail and fish. — VNS
