LONG AN (VNS) — Viet Nam's southern Long An Province and Cambodia's Svay Rieng Province have agreed to work together in protecting immigrant children.
The agreement was reached at a meeting – the third of its kind – held in Long An yesterday, as part of the co-operation between the two countries' border provinces in fighting child trafficking.
The two sides have vowed to co-operate on settling all issues related to children who are living in the border areas and those emigrating between Cambodia and Viet Nam, through their bilateral working teams.
The two localities will focus on issuing regulations on the performance of the working teams, while building plans and activities concerning cross-border migration and child protection.
They will also conduct surveys and investigations into Cambodian children migrating to the Long An Province, as a first step towards designing specific measures for care of the children.
Yesterday's meeting was a follow-up to another meeting between the two localities held in Svay Rieng last year, which had helped to send Cambodian children living in Viet Nam's Long An Province back to their homes in Cambodia.
Communication efforts were promoted to popularise relevant Vietnamese laws and raise public awareness of the danger and consequences of child trafficking.
There has been a remarkable fall in the migration of Cambodian children to Long An. As many as 206 Cambodians – including 134 children – were sent back to their country in 2014. — VNS
