SEOUL (VNS) — Three Vietnamese fraudsters were apprehended in the Republic of Korea after being identified as part of a group that conned 37 Vietnamese expats out of US$137,000.

Detained by the Busan Metropolitan Police Agency's International Crime Investigation, three Vietnamese women married to RoK men and a fourth suspect, a male, were granted bail while they await further investigation. The remaining two are still in custody.

The offenders advertised visa extensions and assistance to illegal residents on social networks. The three Vietnamese women were paid nearly $500 for each case, but never provided any of the promised services.

About 17,000 Vietnamese nationals are living illegally in the RoK. Recently, a number of social networks and Vietnamese forums have featured advertisements or classified ads with the same false promises. — VNS
