HA TINH (VNS) — Fifteen workers were working on the scaffolding when it collapsed, killing 13 and injuring 28 at the Formosa section in Vung Ang economic zone, Ha Tinh Province on Wednesday night.

Minister of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs (MOLISA) Pham Thi Hai Chuyen said this on Thursday at the site.

"The initial cause was identified to be a technical failure of the hydraulic brake system that led to the collapse of the scaffolding platform, which was 20m high, 40m long and 35m wide," Chuyen said.

Thirteen bodies have been recovered. Nine of the injured workers have been taken to Ky Anh District hospital, while 19 are being treated at Ha Tinh provincial hospital.

MOLISA has dispatched a task force lead by the minister herself to the site to direct the search and rescue efforts, as well as to provide medical care and financial support to the affected workers and their families.

"This is a work accident of disastrous consequences. The individuals and organisations responsible for it will be held accountable and punished in accordance with the country's regulations," the minister said.

The task force, which also enlisted the help of experts from the construction ministry, is conducting further investigation into the incident as well as into labour safety issues in the economic zone. — VNS
