BAC KAN (VNS) — Two persons have been killed after an illegal gold mine collapsed in the northern mountainous province of Bac Kan, local authorities said.

The collapse occurred at around 8am yesterday morning when a group of eight people were illegally working in the mine at Thuan Mang Commune's Nin Village.

Dang Van Hoa, 21, and Ban Van Lam, 22, both lived in Thuan Mang Commune, and were buried alive following the collapse.

Trieu Van Thang, an eyewitness, said the local residents had tried to rescue the victims, but could only manage to extract the victims' bodies from the debris after more than five minutes had elapsed.

However, due to being suffocated for a long time, the victims were already dead.

The Chairman of the communal People's Committee, Dao Viet Hung, he was informed about the incident by late evening.

The victim's families did not report the case to the committee, he said, assuming that they might be prosecuted for the deceased' illegal activities.

Local police are further investigating the collapse, he added. — VNS
