HA NOI (VNS) — Politburo member and Secretary of the Ha Noi Party Committee Pham Quang Nghi beat a ceremonial drum to officially launch Ha Noi's annual blood drive yesterday.

The event, known as the Xuan Hong (Red Spring) Festival, has been held in different provinces and cities across the country starting February 24. Ha Noi's version of the festival was held yesterday.

Speaking at the event, Deputy Minister of Health Nguyen Thi Xuyen highlighted the blood donation movement's success in recent years.

The festival helped the health sector deal with blood shortages that often occurred after Tet, she said.

The shortage occurred after Tet as the students, the main forces of blood donation, returned to their hometown to enjoy the holiday whereas the amount of traffic accidents often increased during the holiday, said Nguyen Tuan Duong, deputy director of the National Institute of Haematology and Blood Transfusion.

The event always helped raise awareness about the need for blood donations with the message "Sharing red blood, giving hope," said Professor Nguyen Anh Tri, director of the National Institute of Haematology and Blood Transfusion and head of the festival's organising board.

Dang Duc Luong, a blood donor from Van Dinh Town in Ung Hoa District, said this was his 15th time donating.

"I'm happy whenever I donate my blood, because I'm contributing my strong blood to patients in need," he said.

Nguyen Thi Hue, 38, from the northern province of Nam Dinh, is being treated at the National Institute of Haematology and Blood Transfusion. She expressed her thanks to all blood donors.

"Thanks to their blood, patients like me have the opportunity to enjoy precious moments in our lives," she said.

This year the drive is expected to collect about 8,000 units of blood nationwide. About 5,000 units were donated yesterday in Ha Noi.

The Red Spring Festival has been held annually since 2008, with more than 120,000 donors participating so far. In total, more than 33,700 units of blood have been donated. — VNS
