HA NOI (VNS) — Nguyen Ba Thanh, head of the Central Commission for Internal Affairs, passed away at noon today after several months of being treated for a marrow disorder.
He was taken home from the municipal General Hospital, where he was being treated after his return from the United States.
Two days ago, Thanh fell into a coma.
Last May, Thanh was diagnosed with a marrow disorder and was admitted for the first time to the 108 Military Hospital. He was later transferred to Singapore for further treatment and flown, in August, to the United States, where he received three cycles of chemotherapy and was awaiting a cord blood transplant.
However, based on advice from medical experts in the United States, family members decided not to perform the transplant and to focus on restoring his health back home in Da Nang.
Thanh, 61, served as the Secretary of the Da Nang Party Committee and Chairman of the Da Nang People's Committee from 2003 to 2013. He is credited with transforming the city with modern infrastructure developments and administrative reforms.
He was appointed as the chief of the Central Commission for Internal Affairs, an anti-corruption agency overseen by the Central Party Committee in 2012.
A funeral ceremony will be held in his honour at his residence in Da Nang. The service for the public to pay their respects will start at 2:30pm on February 14.
The memorial service will be held at 9:30am on February 18. He will be laid to rest on the same day in his hometown of Hoa Tien Commune, Hoa Vang District, Da Nang City. — VNS
