HA NOI (VNS) — The Ha Noi City Council for Consideration of Prison Term Reduction and Prison Release announced the premature release of 350 inmates from some of the city's detention centres on Tuesday.
The decision was taken in view of the upcoming Tet festival (Lunar New Year).
Inmates, who were serving light sentences and who have shown extraordinary improvement in rehabilitation, are the ones being released.
To reduce their prison terms, the council had to work closely with concerned agencies on a procedure for consideration and take a decision that would be public, democratic and precise.
Of the total 305 inmates being released in advance, 193 are from Detention Centre 1, 63 from Detention Centre 2, 36 from Detention Centre 3 and 13 from the Detention House.
Among the released, 78 inmates had their whole prison term reduced to zero, one was awarded a 10-month prison term reduction, another obtained a nine-month prison term cut and 225 others saw their prison terms being slashed by one to eight months.
Speaking at a ceremony to announce the decision to release the inmates from the Detention Centre 1 in the Xuan Phuong Commune, Nam Tu Liem District, Sub-Lieutenant General Dinh Van Toan, vice director of Ha Noi Police, congratulated the released inmates, hoping that the inmates still lodged in the detention centres will work harder for rehabilitation so that they can be considered for early release next time.
On behalf of the released inmates, Pham Vu Duc expressed his gratitude towards the Party and State for their benevolence and the detention centres' warders and wardresses for their care and assistance during the inmates' stay in the detention centres.—VNS
