QUANG TRI (VNS) — Viet Nam's leading telecom service provider Viettel on Monday donated an additional VNÐ56 billion (US$2.6 million) to three poor districts in the central Thanh Hia and Quang Tri provinces.

The money will help reduce poverty in Thanh Hoa's Ba Thuoc and Muong Lat districts and Quang Tri's Ðak Rong district in the 2014-2016 period.

The funds will be used to build nearly 500 houses for the poor, two communal health centres in BaThuoc and Ðak Rong districts, and install a wireless broadcasting system in Muong Lat. Viettel will also donate nearly 1,000 cows and cowsheds to poor families.

In the 2009-2014 period, the group granted VNÐ89 billion ($4.1 million) to the three districts for infrastructure, telecommunication and information technology (IT) development, and for helping poor households develop rice production and livestock breeding.

Viettel's Deputy General Director Hong Cong Vinh said that in the 2014-2016 period, 80% of Viettel's funds will go to healthcare and education, while the remaining will be invested in telecommunications and IT. Viettel has so far donated VND145 billion ($6.8 million) to the three districts. — VNS
