HA NOI (VNS) — A bottled drink produced by the Tan Hiep Phat Beverage Group that allegedly contained a dead fly had been tampered with, according to the Ministry of Public Security's Criminal Science Institute.

Closer examination by the institute showed that the cap of a Number 1 soft drink had been punctured by a sharp object.

Police in Tien Giang Province have decided to prosecute the consumer, Vo Van Minh, for allegedly blackmailing the company. He has been detained pending further investigation.

On December 3, Minh claimed he had found a dead fly in a bottle of Number One, a yellow energy drink, and called the Tan Hiep Phat Group to demand VND1 billion (US$47,170) to keep the incident a secret.

The man even threatened to report the case to police and distribute 5,000 leaflets around the province. After three rounds of negotiations, the company agreed to pay half of his initial demand, while secretly reporting the case to police.

On January 27, Minh was arrested in the act of receiving money from the company, and was prosecuted for attempted extortion.

The case has stirred public response, and many social websites are calling for people to boycott the enterprise and its products for deliberately entrapping a consumer.

Local media had previously reported consumer complaints about low quality beverages produced by Tan Hiep Phat, including Dr. Thanh and Number One.

In 2009, authorities found nearly 67 tonnes of expired flavouring at the company's warehouses in Binh Duong Province and HCM City. — VNS
