HA NOI (VNS) — Ha Noi has set an ambitious goal to have about 70 per cent of all communes in the city recognised as belonging to the new rural area by 2020.
According to reports at a conference on Saturday to review the implementation of the Government's rural-area modernisation programme, 109 communes in the city have met all 19 criteria required to be named a new-style area, equal to 28.23 per cent of the total number.
Another 156 communes have fulfilled 14-18 criteria, 115 of them satisfying 10-13 criteria and six communes completing five to nine.
On average, each commune has met 15 criteria, a great improvement from 2010 when the rate was only two.
Introduced by the Government in 2010, the rural-area modernisation programme includes 19 categories, such as infrastructure development, production capacity, public facilities, environmental protection and promotion of local traditions and cultural identities.
It set targets for all rural areas in the country to strive achieve to get the status of new rural area.
Addressing the conference, Pham Quang Nghi, secretary of the city's Party Committee, said the building of new-style rural areas was a great cause and carried long-term and important significance.
While appreciating the achievements the city has made in the past four years, he urged greater public involvement in the cause, from plan making to implementing and monitoring. — VNS
