HCM CITY (VNS)— Construction of the Thu Thiem No 2 Bridge between Ton Duc Thang Street in HCM City's District 1 and the proposed Thu Thiem urban area in District 2 will begin on February 3, the builder, the Dai Quang Minh company, has said.

It will be 852m long, have six lanes and cost VND2.3 trillion (nearly US$108 million).

When completed in 2017, the bridge is expected to provide an impetus for the development of the new urban area, especially a zone planned as a financial and business centre in District 2.

It will also help ease the congestion in Districts 1 and 2, according to HCM City People's Committee.

In 2008 the Viet Nam Construction & Import/Export Corporation (Vinaconex) made plans to build a four-lane bridge, but construction was delayed because Ba Son Shipyard (belonging to the Defence Ministry) on Ton Duc Thang Street had yet to be relocated.

Under a transportation master plan, the bridge will be one of four over the Sai Gon River between the central business district and Thu Thiem Peninsula.

Thu Thiem Bridge No 1 was built in 2010 from Binh Thanh District.

No 3 will be built from District 4 and No 4 from District 7. The city authorities are looking for investors for the two.
