HCM CITY (VNS) — Can Tho needs to speed up its development to become the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta's economic hub as envisaged in a Politburo resolution a decade ago, a recent meeting held in the city heard.
Deputy Prime Minister Vu Van Ninh told the meeting that Can Tho had the potential to become the region's industrial hub.
It has been supported with developing its transport infrastructure and restructuring its economy, he said.
The resolution calls on Can Tho to develop into a centre for culture, industry, trade, services, tourism, technology, education, health, transport, and security in the region.
Le Hung Dung, chairman of the city People's Committee, said however that the investment environment infrastructure, links with other parts of the delta, and human-resource quality remain poor.
Ninh said the city should focus on the development of industry and application of technology in the next 10 years to speed up development.
The Ministry of Science and Technology plans to merge two bio-technology agencies in Can Tho and the Mekong Delta Rice Research Institute into a centre for applied science and technology to be based in Can Tho.
The city's leading activities include aquaculture processing; rice exports; growing fruits and vegetables; manufacture of medicines, chemicals, building materials, textiles, and garments; and wood processing.
It exports industrial products to more than 80 countries and territories.
The city accounts for nearly 20 per cent of the region's industrial production. — VNS
