Vietnamese children receive free cleft lip, palate surgery

HCM CITY (VNS)  — More than 40 doctors from the Japanese Cleft Palate Foundation provided free surgery to 60 children born with cleft lips and palate in the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta province of Ben Tre from December 19 to 26.

The annual surgery, begun in 1993, was led this year by Prof. Nagato Natsume, the director of the foundation.

Surgeries were also performed in Ninh Binh and Quang Nam provinces and HCM City.

The programme will go to the northern port city of Hai Phong for the first time next year.

The foundation has provided free surgeries to more than 2,000 Vietnamese children with cleft lips and palate over the last 20 years.

There are around 100 kinds of cleft lips and palate, according to Natsume. There are more than 200,000 children with cleft lips and palate in Viet Nam, with about 300 getting added to the list each year. — VNS
