HA NOI (VNS) — The Ha Noi People's Committee has asked the Ha Noi Transport and Services Corporation (Transerco) to organise special bus routes for women only during peak hours on a trial basis.
Vice Chairman of the committee Nguyen Quoc Hung said that in areas where female workers and students were vulnerable to sexual assaults, some women-only buses should be put into service.
This will help combat sexual harassment of women and girls in public transport, he added.
A survey of 2,046 people, conducted recently in Ha Noi and HCM City, showed that 57 per cent of the women aged 16 and above considered the streets to be the locations where sexual harassment was most likely to happen.
As many as 87 per cent of the surveyed women and girls said that they had experienced sexual harassment in various forms, such as being whistled and stared at, teased and touched on sensitive parts of their bodies, and receiving comments on their physical appearance.
About 31 per cent of the school-going girls involved in the survey had suffered sexual harassment on buses.
The survey was conducted by ActionAid Viet Nam and the Research Center for Gender, Family and Environment in Development. — VNS
