TAY NINH (VNS) — The People's Court in this southern province yesterday sentenced 11 convicted members of a human trafficking ring to 48 years of imprisonment.

Pham Thi Ngoc Tuyet, 41, of Dong Nai Province and the ringleader, was sentenced to the longest prison term of eight years.

The indictment of the provincial People's Procuracy said provincial police investigators caught three members of the ring while they were carrying out customs procedures for the sale of three women from the province. The women were supposed to be sold to Chinese citizens Chen A Lin, 25, and Dai Chun Bao, 45.

The investigators expanded their operations and later arrested eight more gang members. The human traffickers confessed to the crime, saying they had specialised in selling young Vietnamese women to China as future wives of Chinese men. For each woman, Chinese men pay VND150 million (US$7,000). Since 2013, they had sold seven women to China. — VNS
