Former Deputy PM dies at 80

HA NOI (VNS) — A State-level funeral will be held on Saturday morning in Ha Noi for former Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Cong Tan, who passed away on November 1 at the age of 80.

Before his position as Deputy Prime Minister from 1997 to 2002, Tan served as a member of the Ha Noi Party Standing Committee in 1983 and deputy chairman of Ha Noi People's Committee and deputy secretary of the city's Party Committee in 1986. He was assigned to be Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry in 1987 and became the first Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development after the ministry was formed in 1995 by merging the ministries of agriculture, food industry, forestry and irrigation.

After retiring in 2002, he continued working in the agriculture sector and became the president of an association for small and medium-sized agriculture enterprises.

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc will head the 19-member funeral organising board.

The funeral will be held at the National Funeral Home at 5 Tran Thanh Tong Street from 7-11am. — VNS
