HA NOI (VNS) — The bird flu virus H5N6 (A/H5N6) has been detected in poultry for the first time in Viet Nam, according to the Animal Health Department on Thursday.

The department, which is under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, said that investigations detected the A/H5N6 virus in poultry farms in the northern province of Lang Son and the central Ha Tinh province.

The virus strain was up to 99 per cent similar to the bird flu virus that killed a man in China's Sichuan province in April 2014. The A/H5N6 virus has also been detected in poultry in Laos.

The Ministry of Health yesterday asked provinces and cities to step up their efforts to prevent the spread of the bird flu virus A/H5N6 in the community and its transmission to humans.

The localities were also asked to closely monitor the transport and trading of poultry and to increase vigilance in hospitals and the community for early detection of bird flu cases.

The A/H5N6 virus is a highly pathogenic strain, but there is no evidence of human-to-human transmission yet, according to the World Health Organisation. — VNS
