HA NOI (VNS) — A new species of Chaerilus scorpion, named as Chaerilus Pathom Lourenco&Pham, has been discovered in Pa Thom Cave in northern mountainous Dien Bien Province.
It was co-discovered by Pham Dinh Sac from the Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources and Wilson Lourenco from the Natural History Museum of Paris.
The new species is golden brown and with dark brown spots. The adult male scorpion is 17.1mm in length. The new species, which has lighter colour in the body, is different from other species of the genus Chaerilus.
Sac said that the new finding not only played important in science but also had practical value because scorpion venom was a potential natural material for the pharmaceutical sector now and in the future. — VNS
