HA NOI (VNS) — A national steering committee for the prevention and control of harmful alcohol consumption is set to be formed, as part of the government's efforts to minimise alcohol abuse in the country.

The establishment of the committee is part of a national policy to control drinking up until 2020, which was reviewed during a meeting in Ha Noi yesterday.

Issued by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung on February 12, the policy aims to prevent and minimise the harm caused by alcoholic drinks, especially beer and wine, on public health, social order and safety.

The policy looks to reduce and even eliminate the sale of poor quality alcoholic drinks in the market and reducing annual alcohol consumption among people above the age of 15 to 10 per cent from 2013 to 2016, and down to 6.5 per cent from 2017 to 2020. — VNS
