LAI CHAU (VNS) — Seven Mong ethnic minority students were swept away while crossing Nam Mu River in Ta Gia Commune, Than Uyen District, in the northern mountainous Lai Chau province on April 13.
The students belong to Noong Quoai Village. While six students have been rescued by local residents, one is still missing.
Chairman of the Ta Gia Commune People's Committee Lo Van Xuong said that the primary students were in the middle of the river when a strong current swept them downstream.
On other days, the students were helped by their parents and teachers to cross the river, but yesterday (April 13), as the water level in the river was low, they attempted to cross by themselves.
The students are day-boarders and return to their village, 8 kilometres from the commune's centre, on weekends. — VNS
