HA NOI (VNS)— The Ministry of Information and Communications in co-operation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) launched the Visa Online Management System and Data Centre for MOFA yesterday.
This is the first time Viet Nam has had an official website for online visa applications, with proper procedures and forms for foreigners applying for a Vietnamese visa.
Applicants can also search for visa information and check on the status of their visa application at the web address http://visa.mofa.gov.vn.
The Data Centre will store the Ministry's data and information for years in order to improve management systems and promote the online service.
These two initiatives were part of the World Bank's Information and Communication Technologies Project in Viet Nam. It started in 2005 and continued until last year at a total cost of $106.97 million.
Speaking on the occasion, Pham Binh Minh, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, said that these initiatives reflected the Ministry's determination to modernise work processes and integrate information technology into management.
The Visa Online Management System received praise from Victoria Kwakwa, Country Director for Viet Nam at the World Bank, for reducing the visa processing time to two business days. But, she also urged MOFA to secure the financial budget to maintain the information technology system. — VNS
