HCM CITY (VNS) — Four students were killed and one seriously injured in a fire that broke out following explosions in HCM City's District 10 on Saturday.

All five victims were students at HCM City Polytechnics University and tenants at the house at 342/54/5 in District 10.

Witnesses said they heard four consecutive explosions before a large fire broke out on the second floor of the house at about 3.20pm.

Residents tried to extinguish the fire before fire fighters arrived, bringing the blaze under control in about 30 minutes.

Lieutenant Colonel Huynh Quang Tam, from the HCM City Police Fire Prevention and Fighting Division, said chemicals (including sulphur) bought by Hieu two days earlier might have caused the explosions.

According to initial reports, Hieu was using these chemicals to make firecrackers for use during the coming Tet (Lunar New Year) holidays when they exploded. — VNS
