Beggar claims he was robbed of 25 taels of gold

Update: December, 26/2013 - 17:58

DONG THAP (VNS) — An 86-year-old beggar in the Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap has told police that he was robbed of 25 taels of gold and a large sum of cash while sleeping in a local market after a tiring day.

Nguyen Van Cung told police officials in Tam Nong District that the money represented all of his savings.

The old man has no residence and no relatives to store the gold, so he hid it in his trousers for years.

A group of five robbers, who were arrested yesterday (Dec 26), approached Cung as he was sleeping in the Tram Chim Township market and stripped off his trousers where all of his gold and money had been concealed.

At the police station, Tran Quoc Viet, Cao Van Sang, Le Duc Duy, Tran Van Thanh Dan and Nguyen Thai Tai handed over the 4.5 taels of gold, chains, rings, bangles and VND29 million they had robbed from the old man.

Upon hearing the news, the internet was abuzz with speculation. Many people admired the man's ability to save so much money, but others wondered why he did not use it to buy a house.

The case is under further investigation.—VNS
