HA NOI (VNS) — A former hospital director has been arrested for stealing VND 66 billion (US$3.1 million) by authorising his hospital to pay false medical invoices, according to a local newspaper report.
Nguyen Van Oai, 60, director of the Ha Noi – based Postal Hospital, who is a resident of the city's Hoang Mai District, will remain in custody for four months during ongoing investigations.
As the hospital director from 1997 to 2012, Oai directed staff to forge documents and list a false number of patients treated at the hospital to steal $3.1 million from the Viet Nam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT).
The money was split among those staff members involved in the theft, said officials.
At that time, staff members of the Diagnostic Imaging Department at the hospital also faked vouchers worth nearly VND1,39 billion ($66,000).
The cases came to light after local police received a petition of denouncement. – VNS
