HA NOI (VNS) — Authorities in the northern mountainous province of Lao Cai have mobilised local forces to search for missing Scottish botanist Jamie Taggart, a senior official said yesterday.

Nguyen Ngoc Hinh, deputy chairman of the People's Committee of Sa Pa District, told the VnExpress news website that the search for Taggart - reported missing more than a month ago - had been ramped up.

According to BBC News, the 41-year-old botanist failed to return from a plant-hunting trip last month. It said "subsequent inquiries by his family revealed he has not been seen since November 2, when his rucksack and passport were found at a guest house in the town of Sa Pa."

It quoted Taggart's father as saying the botanist had been in the province for two years previously and that he knew his way around. — VNS
