HA NOI (VNS)— Fighting crime must be a priority for the Party committee, authorities and socio-political organisations in Ha Noi, which has the second highest crime rate in the country.

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc emphasised the importance of crime prevention during a working session with Ha Noi authorities on the issue on Monday.

According to Deputy Minister of Public Security Senior Lieutenant General.Le Quy Vuong, the crime rate in Ha Noi accounted for 9.5 per cent of the entire country, second only to HCM City (10.5 per cent).

Deputy PM Phuc asked municipal authorities to take stronger measures to fight and prevent crime to ensure public safety.

Communal and district-level police chiefs must take responsibility for crime and law breaking in their neighborhoods, and would be prosecuted if they attempted to cover-up any wrongdoings, he said.

Ha Noi needed to focus on preventing crime and increase co-ordination between relevant forces and civil organisations, Phuc noted.

Director of Ha Noi Police Nguyen Duc Chung reported that in the first ten months of this year, the municipal police brought to light 4,500 criminal offenses, including those relating to 485 offenses committed in 2012.

Increased unemployment and rising debt were the major causes behind the surge in criminal offenses, which occurred mainly in the city's outlying districts. — VNS
