Outlook reveals autumn beauty by the seaside

Update: September, 18/2013 - 08:44

As summer draws to a close and the pleasant autumn climes breeze through to showcase Viet Nam in all its beauty, Outlook takes a look at what is arguably the jewel in the nation's crown. This month we reflect on the runaway success story of Quang Ninh Province, which celebrates its 50th anniversary on October 30.

Our in-depth analysis focuses on the strength and appeal of the province today as it stretches its cultural influence to host a national film festival, while also looking back at the history of the region's coal mining industry, which fought off the hardships of war and economic depression to guide the province towards prosperity.

We also cast an eye over the province's future prospects with a thought-provoking article on efforts to connect Co To Island to the national grid. And for the aesthetically minded, we have a breathtaking photo essay of Bai Tu Long Gulf to illustrate exactly how the region attracted 4.2 million tourists in the first half of 2013.

Elsewhere, we tell the remarkable tale of the Japanese photographer dedicating his life to Vietnamese war victims, take a death-defying ride on Cambodia's bamboo railway and uncover the incredible story of a little known oath that played a starring role on the day Viet Nam declared its independence.

In addition to the usual features and treasured short story, we tell the unlikely tale of how an oil boom is fuelling Azerbaijan's ascent onto football's world stage and sink our teeth into one of HCM City's most renowned noodle specialties.

Readers can also catch up on what's hot in the country's culinary, sports and arts scenes – and check out listings for everything from bars to embassies. Outlook is available for VND14,000 at the Viet Nam News offices at 79 Ly Thuong Kiet Street in Ha Noi and 120 Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street in HCM City. — VNS
