One dead, seven missing after boat accident

HCM CITY (VNS) – One person was found dead and seven others were still missing in the sea of Vung Tau after a serious collision between a Singaporean vessel and local fishing boat carrying 16 fishermen before the break of dawn on Monday.

According to local officials, the Singaporean vessel Sima Saphire was on its way to Malaysia from HCM City when it collided at 2am with a boat carrying fishermen from Tien Giang province 50 nautical miles off the coast of Vung Tau.

During the accident all 16 fishermen were knocked from the boat into the sea. Fortunately, eight of them were brought on board the container vessel. Eight other went missing. At 9am the body of one victim was found, Le Van Chien, director of Vung Tau Maritime and Port Authority, reported to local media.

After the accident occurred, the Vung Tau Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre and local authorities sent two rescue vessels, the SAR 413 and SAR 272, to search for survivors. Fishing boats operating in the area were also requested to help locate any survivors.
