Quang Nam prepares for more earthquakes

DA NANG (VNS)— More than 1,600 soldiers and local people took part in search and rescue drill yesterday to handle the possibility of another serious earthquakes in Bac Tra My district, near Song Tranh 2 Hydro-power plant in central Quang Nam Province.

It was the first drill held in the district, which has been hit by nearly 100 tremors and earthquakes since last year.

In the training scenario, 50 people died, 10,000 were missing and more than 20,000 residents lost their homes. One thousand schools, heath centres, bridges and roads were also damaged.

Rescue forces played the role of evacuating 90,000 people to safe areas. Two helicopters from the Air Force and Air Defence sent first aid and food to troops and residents isolated by water and landslides.

In real life, about 25 tremors were recorded near where the hydro-power plant is located from October 3 to November 16 last year, according to the provincial Military Command.

An earthquake measuring 4.7 degree on the Richter scale was also recorded during that time, affecting 13 districts and townships in Quang Nam Province and damaging more than 1,000 houses and 20 public sites. — VNS
