HAI DUONG (VNS)— The Global Action Week for Education with the national slogan "Every child has the right to have good teachers" and "Let's develop dedicated and capable teachers for all learners" was kicked off yesterday in northern Hai Duong Province.

Teachers really play a key role in training students because students only learn best when they have good teachers, said Deputy Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Vinh Hien at the launching ceremony.

A good teacher will help to orient and develop a student's personality, he said.

"So a good teacher is thought to be a dedicated and talented person," he said.

They have to adapt to an ever-changing education environment in Viet Nam, especially when the education system has shifted from ensuring the "right to access to education" to "ensuring the right to access to a good quality education", he said.

Pratibha Nehta, UN Resident Co-ordinator in Viet Nam, recommended that Viet Nam needed special measures to attract, train and retain teachers in remote and underprivileged areas to ensure a good education for all with less than 1,000 days left for all countries to reach an Education for All and Millennium Development Goals, she added.

Nguyen Thanh Hang, a student of Hai Duong Province's Pha Lai High School, said, "There is no good student if there is no good teacher.

"We need good teachers to orient us to better development," she said.

Viet Nam now has more than 1.1 million teachers at all levels, according to statistics from the Ministry of Education.

A forum was also held yesterday for students, parents, teachers and local education authorities to discuss the most effective solutions for improving the quality of teachers nation-wide. Similar forums will also be organised in localities nationwide as the main activity of the week.

The programme was co-organised by the Ministry of Education and Training, the United Nations Children Fund in Viet Nam, and other non-governmental organisations.

Global Action Week, a worldwide annual campaign, takes place from April 21-28 this year with the global slogan "Every Child needs a Teacher".
