HA NOI (VNS)– The Government yesterday urged the whole nation to be on alert and for relevant authorities to tighten control of transport and trade of illegally imported poultry and poultry products to stem the spread the new deadly bird-flu strain.

In a public telegraph signed by Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan yesterday, all ministries, sectors and localities were asked to join forces in preventing the penetration and spread of bird-flu viruses, especially the new Type A H7N9, into Viet Nam.

As of yesterday, a total number of human infections in China reached 14 with 5 of these fatal. Yesterday afternoon, a working team, led by Deputy Minister of Health Nguyen Thanh Long, checked the monitoring for prevention and quarantine on the bird flu at Ha Noi's Noi Bai International Airport.

The monitoring system was established right after fatalities in China were reported. Passengers arriving into Vietnam will be required to pass through an airport X-ray body scanner that detects abnormal body temperatures. -- VNS
