HA NOI (VNS)— Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan said nurturing prosperous and happy families was the top concern of the Party and Government while launching Viet Nam's Year of Family in Ha Noi on Saturday.

"The year is a chance for each of us, each family, organisation and locality to review family activities in their areas and to select and implement work on top priority targets for the development of the country's families," said Nhan.

Nhan urged relevant sectors and agencies to complete plans for building sustainable families as foundations for a happy and stable society this year.

He also suggested that the Viet Nam Women's Union should collaborate with the Ministry of Industry and Trade to implement "safe market" models at all communes, districts and towns nation-wide in an effort to promote food safety in the community.

The event, entitled "Connecting Love", was organised by the Ministry of Culture, Sport and Tourism and the Viet Nam Women's Union with an aim to raise public awareness on the role of the family and gender equality, as well as the need to stamp out domestic violence.

During the year, activities would be focused on supporting family building, setting up Happy Family clubs or models of environment protection and traffic safety families and improving people's knowledge of the current laws on family issues. —VNS
