HA NOI (VNS) — Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong visited staff at K hospital and the National Hospital of Pediatrics yesterday to congratulate them on the occasion of Vietnamese Doctors Day.

During the visit, Trong affirmed that the Vietnamese Party and State regard public healthcare as an important strategic task. Doctors Day gives people a chance to honour medical care providers and express their gratitude to them for overcoming difficulties, as well as providing check-ups and treatment and engaging in scientific research and training.

Trong expressed hope that Vietnamese doctors would follow President Ho Chi Minh's teachings and continue striving to modernize their profession. He also offered gifts to patients at both hospitals.

The 1,000-bed hospital, a national leading cancer treatment centre, is always filled to capacity, with the number of patients rising by 5-10 percent each year.

Bui Dieu, the hospital director, said that the country of 88 million sees 170,000–200,000 cancer sufferers and over 1 million tumour patients every year, posing challenges for both K hospital and the medical sector as a whole.

The National Hospital of Pediatrics boasts 1,250 beds and over 1,600 medical staff. Last year, it offered health check-ups to 700,000 children and treatment using advanced technology to 60,000. — VNS
