Poor receive gifts ahead of Tet

HA NOI (VNS) — Many believe that those who have a pleasant Tet will enjoy a prosperous year. So as the biggest holiday in Viet Nam approaches, the Government is working to ensure that even disadvantaged people can celebrate the Lunar New Year in style.

Last weekend, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan presented Tet gifts to 400 policy beneficiary families and Agent Orange/dioxin victims in the southern provinces of Bac Lieu and Tra Vinh.

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc also presented gifts to war veterans and heroic Vietnamese mothers in the central city of Quang Ngai. During his working visit yesterday, he asked local authorities to ensure that no one went hungry during Teát.

Meanwhile, the Government’s support programme helped local authorities in the northern mountainous province of Laøo Cai deliver 185 tonnes of rice to about 17,000 poor people, mainly from the Moâng, Dao and Haø Nhì ethnic groups.

In northern Ninh Bình Province, the provincial Fatherland Front Committee and Bank for Investment and Development of Vieät Nam gave 130 presents to poor workers and disabled people.

And in the Central Highlands province of Dak Nong, the provincial Border Guard Command drew on donations from local offices and companies to buy cooking oil and seasoning powder for E De people in Buon Nui Village in the remote Cu Jut District.

The HCM Communist Youth Union in central Ninh Thuan Province’s Phan Rang City organised a festive programme for poor children last Saturday. Each child was given a present worth VND150,000 ($7.4) supplied by funds raised by the union and local businesses. — VNS
