NGHE AN (VNS)— Nine Vietnamese and one Lao citizen were killed when a bus carrying construction workers overturned in Laos yesterday, local authorities say.

Six Vietnamese and two Lao citizens were injured in the accident, which occurred in the southern province of Champasak, 685km from the capital, Vientiane.

The Vietnamese victims came from the Nam Thanh and Van Dien Communes of Nam Dan District in the central province of Nghe An.

According to the Consulate General of Viet Nam in Pakse, the injured are currently receiving treatment in a local hospital while the bodies of the deceased will be returned to their families by tomorrow.

The consulate has contacted the victims' Lao employer to discuss the firm's responsibility towards the Vietnamese victims and their families.

Tran Ba Minh, chairman of Van Dien Commune People's Committee, said that those involved in the crash were all seasonal workers.

"We have visited their families and offered our condolences to them. We have also provided them with VND1 million (US$48). Financial support for the injured will be provided later after we can more thoroughly review their situations," he said.

The authorities of Nam Dan District and the district's Red Cross Association also plan to visit the victims' families to offer them support. — VNS
