LAM DONG (VNS)— Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has asked the Central Highlands Province of Lam Dong to overhaul efforts to tap its strength in tourism and high tech agriculture.
In his meeting yesterday with Lam Dong core leaders, Trong said he was impressed by the province's achievements in socio-economic development and Party building.
"Lam Dong has a very important and strategic position in the region and the nation as a whole, in economics, society, national defence and foreign diplomacy.
"The province has many potentials and enjoys comparative advantages in tourism development, agriculture, industrial processing and mineral extraction," Trong said.
"In 2012, in the context of many difficulties and challenges, however, with determination and dynamism of the provincial leaders and people, Lam Dong has scored an impressive gross domestic product of 14 per cent with agriculture production value of VND89 million ($4,300) per hectare. The percentage of poor households in the province has dropped to 6.4 per cent while the per capita income is VND32 million ($1,500) per annum – higher than the country's average."
Despite all these gains, Trong asked the provincial leaders to draw lessons learned from this year to make next year better.
"You should utilise the province's strengths in tourism and temperate climate agriculture products, like coffee, tea, vegetable and flowers, for export," Trong said.
He supported the provincial leaders' proposal to build Da Lat into a tourism and convalescence city, of the nation and internationally, by the second quarter of next year.
He asked the province to further promote the movement to build new rural areas which would go hand in hand with sustainable poverty alleviation and the expansion of the high quality agriculture production model.
Regarding the tasks in the coming years, Trong urged the province to take economic development as the centre, Party building work as the core and culture as the spiritual foundation of the society.
During his two days' working visit to Lam Dong on Thursday and Friday, Nguyen Phu Trong visited Dong Thanh Commune, in Lam Ha District, where most of the residents were relocated from Ha Noi in 1976. He was happy to see the lives of the locals had "constantly been improved".
He also stopped over at the Xuan Huong co-operative which specialises in producing and selling organic vegetables in Da Lat City. — VNS
