Rumours of leech larvae in milk refuted

Update: September, 26/2012 - 09:32

HA NOI (VNS)— No traces of leech larvae had been found in powdered milk, and such rumours were distorted and dangerous, according to an official press release from the Dairy Producers' Association.

In the document, the association's secretary general Trinh Quy Pho confirmed that leeches could not survive the production process or the sugar levels in liquid and condensed milk.

Earlier this month, a rumour about leech larvae found in a milk carton started in the northern province of Vinh Phuc, and was posted on the internet. However, tests found nothing abnormal in the carton.

Another case has also been reported in Ha Noi's Soc Son District. Tests showed that some powdered milk had not been preserved in the correct conditions, allowing insects to lay their eggs that subsequently turned into larvae. — VNS
