HA NOI (VNS)— The Ministry of Transport has officially rejected a proposal to import motorised rickshaws as a means of easing traffic on the busy roads of Ha Noi.
The tuk tuk, which has four to six seats, is a popular means of transport in Thailand, India, Sri Lanka and other Asian countries.
The vehicle was nominated by the Ha Noi Transport Association as a solution to the traffic congestion problems suffered in the capital. The Ministry praised the thought process behind the initiative in an official document yesterday, but rejected the idea over concerns about the loud engine of the tuk tuk and its high emission of air pollution.
A comparison was made with the xe lam, a similar means of transport which authorities fought hard to remove from the roads six years ago. — VNS
