US ambassador donates blood

Update: September, 08/2012 - 10:40

HA NOI — US Ambassador David Shear put his body on the line for a good cause when he donated blood at the US Embassy's inaugural blood drive on Thursday, held to support and encourage blood donation.

In the US, only 6.6 per cent of the population has type O negative blood, commonly referred to as the universal donor, according to David Mahan, US Embassy's Foreign Service Health Practitioner.

"While hospitals have a high demand for this type of blood, generally speaking, it is very rare in the Asian population—less than 1 per cent of the Vietnamese population has type O negative blood," he said.-VNS
