NGHE AN — A coach carrying Buddhist followers careened into an abyss early yesterday morning in the central province of Nghe An.

So far three people have been reported dead while 34 others are being treated at local Hospital 115. Many have severe head and neck injuries. Two third of the victims are women aged between 50-70.

"Some victims with minor injuries are recovering," said Pham Van Dung, the hospital's deputy director, before adding that more critical cases would be sent to Ha Noi for better treatment.

The tragic accident occurred at 4.15am while the coach and 13 other buses were carrying 600 Buddhist followers from Ha Noi to the central province of Quang Tri Province to hold a mass for war martyrs.

The cause of the accident was attributed to the driver's loss of control of the vehicle on Truong Ven mountain pass. — VNS
