Minimum wage raised 35 per cent

Update: August, 17/2012 - 12:15

HA NOI – The Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs has proposed a draft decree with two options to raise the region-based monthly minimum wage for every employee.

One option proposes raising the monthly minimum wage from VND1.4-2 million (US$67-96) to VND1.9-2.7 million ($91-130), while the second would raise wages to VND1.8-2.5 million ($86-120).

The country now has four regions, ranked according to the socio-economic development level of each region.

Region I covers the urban districts of Ha Noi and HCM City. Region II covers rural districts of Ha Noi and HCM City and urban districts of cities including Can Tho, Da Nang, and Hai Phong.

Region III covers provincial cities and some districts of Bac Ninh, Bac Giang, Hai Duong, and Vinh Phuc. Region IV covers the remaining localities.

If approved, the decree will take effect at the beginning of next year for every company, business, co-operative, farm, household, individual and organisation that hires employees.

Allowances and social benefits are calculated based on the minimum wage, in accordance with the law.

And employers are still encouraged to pay their employees more than the minimum wage.

The draft decree also proposed paying skilled employees at least seven times more than the minimum wage. – VNS
