BAC GIANG — Three people were sentenced to a total of 13 years and six months' imprisonment by the Peoples' Court in the northern province of Bac Giang yesterday for conducting propaganda against the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam.
The three were also given three and four years' probation on top of their jail terms.
The court, which tried them under Clause 1, Article 88, of the Penal Code, gave Nguyen Kim Nhan five-and-a-half years imprisonment.
Dinh Van Nhuong and Do Van Hoa both received four years.
According to the indictment presented at the Bac Giang provincial People's Procuracy, Nhan, Nhuong and Hoa had repeatedly lodged complaints to the authorities.
However, it was alleged they had also established contact with other local people who had protested against the State.
It was also claimed that they had contacted foreign newspapers and radio stations and provided incorrect information against the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam – and slandered the Communist Party of Viet Nam and the people's administration.
The court was told the three men prepared documents, gave interviews, collected and stored libellous documents that smeared the Party and State leaders and caused division between the people and the Party.
The three were also accused of inciting protests that affected political security, social order and safety. — VNS
