BAC LIEU – The Animal Health department in the Southern province of Bac Lieu said yesterday that blue-ear disease in pig herds was basically under control.
The department reported that there had been no new cases of blue ear in herds in the last 21 days, long enough to state that the epidemic had ended.
In the area, pork trading has resumed and consumers are buying, said the department.
To prevent the disease returning, the department said it would raise pig farmers' awareness of hygiene issues and ensure pig pens were regularly disinfected and cleaned.
However, the department said it was worried about further outbreaks of the disease in the rainy season.
It added that vaccination of pigs was often not properly carried out due to "loose connections" between raisers and local authorities.
In early June, there were nine outbreaks of blue ear in Gia Lai and Vinh Loi, Almost 150 animals had to be destroyed, pork prices slumped - and farmers suffered financial losses. – VNS
