QUANG NINH – A new provincial route will shorten the distance between the capital and Ha Long Bay in the northern province of Quang Ninh from 168 to nearly 130 km, said Cao Tuong Huy, chief of the local People's Committee Secretariat.
About US$609 million will be drawn from state and local budgets, investment funds as well as domestic and foreign enterprises, he added.
The project, a combination of the Ha Noi - Hai Phong and Noi Bai - Ha Long national highways, will kick off this year and reach completion by 2015. It will help bring down travelling time from three to one and a half hours.
The upgrade will add four lanes to the existing two and allow vehicles to travel speeds of up to 120 km per hour, Huy said.
He added that the shorter new route would help Ha Long to attract more visitors from Ha Noi and Hai Phong.
Construction will be supervised by the Quang Ninh Department of Transport. - VNS
