HA NOI -- The Government plans to install a tsunami warning system in high-risk areas at 13 coastal cities and provinces across the country during the next five years.
Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai has approved the project, which will protect coastal areas and populated islands in the central provinces of Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Thua Thien-Hue, Da Nang, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai and southern provinces of Binh Dinh, Phu Yen, Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan and Ba Ria-Vung Tau.
The project will see tsunami warnings handled by the Institute of Geophysics, the agency responsible for analysing and announcing tsunami threats in Viet Nam. The warning will be conveyed directly to relevant authorities, local authorities and people in affected areas.
The project will be implemented between 2012 and 2016. Tsunami alert stations will be built in seven provinces during the next three years and the rest will be set up in six provinces by 2016. -- VNS
