HA NOI – The An Giang People's Committee recently gave Care International a badge of merit for its work to support flood victims in the southern province.
Since last October, Care has spent more than US$300,000 on its "Urgent support for Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta Flood Victims" campaign in An Giang, where flooding last year killing 18 people, destroyed 45 houses and caused VND885 billion ($42 million) in damages.
Most of the money has been gone to food, clean water and hygiene improvement as well as to restore livelihoods of 5,000 residents in the districts of An Phu, Chau Phu and Tinh Bien.
The support included 217 tonnes of rice, 220 boats and fish nets, 2,600 safeguards, about 5,000 water containers.
Following the lead of Care International, an Australian NGO also sponsored a six-month disaster management project in An Giang in order to raise awareness and help people guard themselves against natural disasters.
The $36,000 project would train local authorities and residents about the risks and how to deal with disasters in their communities. – VNS
